gross

Exxon Mobil made record profits in 2007: $40.6bn, Shell made record profits of $27.56bn.

Disgusting.

Disgusting why?

The company provides jobs for 82,000 people all over the world and puts millions (or billions) of dollars into the hands of its executives and shareholders. All of that money is either saved/invested or spent. Either way, the money helps to employ others and serves as a massive economic engine.

I guarantee that almost every one of those 82,000 employees is thankful to have a job.

My company doesn't employ 82,000 people. 82,000 families aren't fed by our profits.

Now, oil spills, environmental concerns, human rights allegations? These are all valid criticisms of Exxon. But creating a profit by selling a legitimate product? That's what each and every one of us in the free enterprise system should do.

It's a free market system. They're not required to sell you their gas and you're not required to buy it. But, if you buy it, they have a legitimate right to make a profit.
